This is one of the most common phone calls we get from C-Bus owners: “I downloaded the Wiser app, it asks me to set up a new device, and it can’t find my system anywhere.” Nine times out of ten the system is perfectly healthy — the homeowner has simply installed the wrong app. Schneider Electric uses the name Wiser across two completely separate product lines, and the apps don’t talk to each other’s hardware. So before you download anything, the first job is matching the app to the controller you actually have on the wall.
Let’s clear it up once and for all, in plain language, so you know exactly which icon to tap on.
Two different things called “Wiser”
The brand name causes most of the confusion, so here’s the key idea: Wiser is a marketing name Schneider Electric has used for more than one smart-home system over the years. The two you’ll run into today are:
- Wired C-Bus with a Wiser controller — this is the proper C-Bus system most of our customers have. It runs over the pink C-Bus cable, with output units (relays and dimmers) in the switchboard and input units like Saturn, Neo or DLT switches around the home. A Wiser controller sits on the network to give you the app, schedules and scenes.
- Wireless Wiser Home — a newer, separate range of Zigbee and Wi-Fi devices (smart plugs, wireless dimmers, a small hub). It is not C-Bus and never connects to it. It’s aimed at apartments and retrofits where there’s no structured wiring.
Same brand on the box, two entirely different ecosystems under the bonnet. Pick the wrong one and the app will hunt forever for hardware that isn’t there.
If you have a wired C-Bus system: use the Wiser 2 app
If your home was wired with C-Bus — pink cable, a switchboard full of Clipsal output units, scene buttons that do more than one light at a time — then you have a wired controller, and the app you want is Wiser 2.
The Wiser 2 app is the current app for C-Bus home controllers. It pairs with:
- the Wiser Home Controller MKII, and
- the newer SpaceLogic C-Bus Home Controller (the same role, current generation).
These controllers hold your schedules, scenes and the dashboard you see on your phone. Day to day, Wiser 2 is what gives you remote access, timer programmes for the garden lights, holiday modes and one-tap scenes like “Goodnight”. If that’s the kind of control you’ve had set up, Wiser 2 is your app.
If you have wireless Wiser Home devices: use the Wiser by SE app
The Wiser by SE app (sometimes just shown as “Wiser Home”) is built for the wireless Zigbee/Wi-Fi Wiser range. If you bought individual smart plugs, a wireless dimmer module or a small Wiser hub off the shelf and there’s no pink cable or switchboard automation involved, this is your app.
What about the old Wiser 1 app?
The original first-generation Wiser controller used an older app, usually referred to as Wiser 1. If you’ve owned your system for many years you may remember it. For current C-Bus controllers — the MKII and the SpaceLogic unit — the app you want is Wiser 2, not Wiser 1.
If you’ve still got an original Wiser 1 controller, it’s worth a chat with our team about where you stand. The hardware can still work, but the older app and operating system are well past their prime, and we often recommend stepping up to a current controller so you’re on supported software with proper remote access. We can talk you through that without any pressure.
Not sure which controller you’ve got? Here’s how to check
You don’t need to guess. There are two reliable ways to confirm exactly what’s on your wall.
- Read the catalogue number on the controller. Find the controller (often near or in the switchboard cupboard, or mounted on a wall in a comms area). The model name and catalogue number are printed on the label. “Wiser Home Controller” or “SpaceLogic C-Bus Home Controller” confirms wired C-Bus and the Wiser 2 app.
- Look at your switches and switchboard. Clipsal C-Bus scene switches and a switchboard with rows of relay/dimmer output units means wired C-Bus. A home with only off-the-shelf wireless smart plugs and modules points to wireless Wiser Home.
- Send us a photo. If you’d rather not climb into the meter box, snap a clear picture of the controller’s label and the front of your switchboard and send it through. We deal with these every week and can tell you the right app in a minute or two.
Why matching the app to the hardware matters before you download
Because both apps carry the Wiser name and both sit right next to each other in the App Store and Google Play, it’s genuinely easy to grab the wrong one. When that happens, the symptoms look alarming but are completely harmless:
- The app launches into a “set up a new device” or “add your first device” flow.
- It scans your Wi-Fi and reports it can’t find a controller or hub.
- You assume the C-Bus system has failed, when in fact it’s humming along fine.
Delete the wrong app, install the right one, and the “fault” disappears. If you’d like a refresher on getting set up properly the first time, our Wiser help section walks through it, and our C-Bus getting started guide explains how the wired system fits together as a whole.
Quick reference
- Wired C-Bus + Wiser Home Controller MKII or SpaceLogic C-Bus Home Controller → Wiser 2 app.
- Original first-gen Wiser 1 controller → old Wiser 1 app (worth talking to us about an upgrade).
- Wireless Zigbee/Wi-Fi Wiser Home devices (no C-Bus) → Wiser by SE app.
If you want to read the manufacturer’s own product information, Schneider Electric publishes details for both ranges over at clipsal.com — just be aware the shared branding can still make it tricky to tell which page belongs to which system, which is exactly why a quick check with us saves time.
If the app still can’t see your controller after you’ve installed the right one, that’s usually a network or controller issue rather than an app issue, and our troubleshooting articles are the next stop.
A quick word from us
We set up and look after C-Bus and Wiser systems across Melbourne every week, so if you’re staring at two apps with the same name and aren’t sure which one belongs to your home, don’t sweat it — that confusion is by design, not your fault. Send us a photo of your controller’s label and we’ll point you to the right app straight away. If you’d like a hand, get in touch with the DUKE team via our contact page and we’ll sort it out for you.

Frequently asked questions
Which app do I use for my wired C-Bus system?
If you have a wired C-Bus system with a Wiser Home Controller MKII or a SpaceLogic C-Bus Home Controller, you use the Wiser 2 app. It’s the current app for C-Bus controllers and handles your scenes, schedules and remote access.
Will the Wiser by SE app control my C-Bus lights?
No. Wiser by SE pairs with the separate wireless Wiser Home range of Zigbee and Wi-Fi devices. It has no connection to C-Bus and will report that it can’t find your system if you install it on a wired C-Bus home.
My Wiser app says it can't find my system — is my C-Bus broken?
Almost always no. The most common cause is having installed the wrong app. Delete it, install the correct one (Wiser 2 for wired C-Bus) and the problem usually disappears. If it persists after that, it’s likely a network or controller issue worth investigating.
How do I find out which controller I have?
Read the catalogue number and name on the controller’s label — ‘Wiser Home Controller’ or ‘SpaceLogic C-Bus Home Controller’ confirms wired C-Bus. You can also look at your switches and switchboard, or send us a photo of the label and we’ll confirm the right app for you.
I have an old Wiser 1 controller — what now?
The original Wiser 1 used an older app and operating system that’s well past its prime. It may still work, but we often recommend upgrading to a current controller so you’re on supported software with proper remote access. Give us a call and we’ll talk you through your options.
