Nine times out of ten when a customer rings us about their controller, it’s one of two things: their EA-series controller is getting on a bit and they’ve heard the newer Core controllers run smoother, or Control4 has flagged that older hardware is dropping off the supported list. Either way, the question is always the same — “If we swap the brains of the system, do I lose everything?”
Short answer: no. Your whole project comes across. But there’s a bit more to it than that, so here’s exactly what to expect when we upgrade or replace the controller in your Melbourne home.
Why you’d upgrade in the first place
The controller is the heart of your Control4 system — it’s the bit that ties your lighting, climate, audio, video and security together and runs the automation behind the scenes. The EA-1, EA-3 and EA-5 controllers were the workhorses for years, and plenty are still humming along nicely. But there are a few good reasons to move to a Core 1, Core 3 or Core 5.
- More grunt. The Core 3 has a faster processor and more memory than the EA-3 it replaces. If your system has grown over the years — more rooms, more streaming, more automation — you’ll feel the difference in how quickly things respond.
- Operating system support. Control4 keeps rolling out OS 3 updates with new features, security patches and fixes. Older controllers eventually stop receiving the latest releases. Moving to current hardware keeps you on the supported path for years to come. You can read more about the platform on control4.com.
- Reliability. Electronics don’t last forever. If your EA controller is six or seven years old, proactively replacing it beats having it fall over on a Friday night when you’ve got people over.
The big reassurance: your project transfers across
This is the part everyone worries about, so let’s put it to bed. Your Control4 system is built as a “project” — a single file that holds every device, every room, every lighting scene, every button on your remote and every line of automation we’ve programmed for you. That project lives in Composer, the dealer software we use to build and maintain your system.
When we move you from an EA-3 to a Core 3 (or whichever pairing suits your home), we don’t rebuild everything from scratch. We migrate your existing project onto the new controller. Control4’s tools are designed for exactly this — the EA and Core families are close cousins, so the transfer is clean.
That means all the work that’s gone into your system over the years — the way your “Goodnight” button dims the right lights and arms the alarm, the way the lounge wakes up when you hit Watch — comes with you.
What stays exactly the same for you
From where you’re standing as the homeowner, almost nothing changes day to day. After the swap:
- Your Halo or Neeo remotes work the same way, with the same buttons doing the same jobs.
- Your T3 and T4 touchscreens show the same rooms and the same favourites.
- The Control4 app on your phone looks and behaves identically — same logins, same layout.
- Your lighting scenes, keypad engraving and button behaviour are unchanged.
- Your audio zones, streaming services and video sources all stay mapped as they were.
In other words, the family doesn’t need to relearn anything. The lights still come on when you walk in, the telly still turns on with one button. We’ve just given the system a healthier, faster heart.
What actually changes under the bonnet
A few technical bits do shift, and it’s worth knowing about them:
- Zigbee re-pairing. The controller contains the Zigbee radio that talks to your wireless dimmers, keypads and some locks. When the controller changes, those Zigbee devices need to re-identify to the new radio. We handle this as part of the swap — it’s routine, but it’s why the job takes a little time rather than five minutes.
- 4Sight / Control4 Connect. Your remote-access subscription is tied to your account, not the old controller, so it carries over. We just re-register the new controller against it.
- Licences and drivers. Device drivers and any licensed features get re-applied to the new controller. Again, that’s on us.
How much downtime to expect
We’re honest about this so there are no surprises. A straightforward EA-3 to Core 3 swap, where the project migrates cleanly, is usually a few hours of work — often a single morning or afternoon visit.
During that window:
- There’ll be a period where the smart-home automation is offline — lights won’t respond to keypads, the app won’t connect, scenes won’t fire.
- Your essential services keep working. Your lights still switch at the wall, your TV still turns on with its own remote, your internet keeps running. Control4 sits on top of those things; it doesn’t replace them.
- We re-pair Zigbee devices and test every room before we leave.
How DUKE handles the swap and backup restore
Here’s the process we follow so the migration is boring in the best possible way — no drama, no lost programming.
- We take a fresh backup first. Before we touch any hardware, we connect via Composer and pull a current backup of your live project. This is your safety net. If anything looked off, we could put the old controller straight back and restore exactly where you were.
- We prep the new controller. The Core controller is loaded with the matching OS 3 version and updated to be compatible with your project before it ever goes into your rack.
- We migrate the project. Your project is transferred onto the new Core controller, with device addresses and drivers re-applied. This is the step that carries all your scenes, rooms and automation across.
- We physically swap the hardware. The old controller comes out, the new one goes in. Any fixed wiring in the rack and any work at the switchboard is done by our licensed electricians in line with AS/NZS 3000 — that’s not optional, it’s the law in Australia.
- We re-pair and re-connect. Zigbee devices re-identify to the new radio, network and remote access are re-established, and licensed features are switched back on.
- We test the lot with you. Before we pack up, we walk the house room by room and check your everyday routines actually work — your favourite scenes, your remotes, the app, audio and video sources.
Do you need to do anything?
Honestly, very little. We’ll confirm your network and remote access details, ask you to be home (or leave us access) during the visit, and let you know roughly when automation will be down. Beyond that, we do the heavy lifting.
If you’ve made your own changes over time — say you renamed a room in the app — just let us know so we account for it. And if you’re not sure whether your controller is due for an upgrade, send us your model number or a photo of the rack and we’ll tell you exactly where you stand.
The bottom line
Upgrading from an EA to a Core controller sounds daunting, but for you it’s almost invisible. Your project, your scenes and your routines all come across, the family keeps using the system the same way, and you end up with faster, better-supported hardware that’ll keep getting Control4’s updates for years. The main thing you’ll notice is that everything feels a touch snappier.
If you’re thinking it might be time, or your controller’s been playing up, get in touch and we’ll talk you through what suits your home. We’d rather give you straight advice than sell you hardware you don’t need — give us a yell via our contact page and we’ll sort it.
Cheers,
Adam and the DUKE team
Frequently asked questions
Will I lose my lighting scenes and automation when the controller is replaced?
No. Your entire Control4 project — including scenes, room setups, remote button mappings and automation — migrates across to the new controller. We take a full backup beforehand as a safety net, so nothing is lost.
How long will my smart home be offline during the swap?
A straightforward EA-3 to Core 3 upgrade is usually a few hours, often a single morning or afternoon. Automation is offline during that window, but your lights still work at the wall and your TV and internet keep running, since Control4 sits on top of those services.
Do my remotes, touchscreens and app need to be reset?
No. Your Halo or Neeo remotes, T3/T4 touchscreens and the Control4 mobile app all work the same way afterwards, with the same buttons, rooms and logins. The family won’t need to relearn anything.
Does my 4Sight or Control4 Connect subscription carry over?
Yes. Remote access is tied to your account rather than the old hardware, so it transfers. We simply re-register the new Core controller against your subscription during the swap.
How do I know if my controller actually needs upgrading?
If your system runs well and still receives OS 3 updates, there’s no rush. We’ll happily check your model and tell you straight whether it’s worth upgrading now or waiting — just send us your controller model or a photo of the rack.
