For homeownersBasicApplies to OS 3.4+Last reviewed 2026-06-14

Nine times out of ten when a customer rings us a few weeks after handover, it’s because someone else in the house wants to control things from their own phone. Maybe the kids want to turn their own lights and music on, or your partner is tired of asking you to unlock the front door from the app. The good news is that Control4 makes this dead easy, and once we’ve set up the main account at handover, adding the rest of the family takes about two minutes.

Here’s exactly how it works on OS 3.4 and above.

Why we set up your account at handover

When our team finishes commissioning your system, one of the last things we do is get your Control4 account (sometimes called your customer.control4.com login) created and linked to your controller. This is the account that ties everything together — it’s what lets the Control4 app on your phone find your home, and it’s what powers remote access through 4Sight and Control4 Connect when you’re away from the house.

We make that first account the owner account. It’s the master key. From there, you can invite as many family members as you like, each with their own login, without ever having to share your password. That’s the bit people don’t realise: you should never just hand your owner password around the family. Invite them properly and everyone gets their own secure access.

Tip If you’re not sure whether you’re the owner of the account, open the Control4 app, go to Settings > Account. The owner account is the email address we set up with you on handover day. If it’s not yours, give us a yell and we’ll sort the transfer.

Inviting a family member from the app

You’ll do all of this from the Control4 app on your own phone or tablet — the same one you use day to day. Make sure you’re connected and signed in to your home first.

  1. Open the Control4 app and tap the Settings (gear) icon, usually top-right or in the side menu depending on your layout.
  2. Choose Account, then Users (on some versions this reads Manage Users or Residents).
  3. Tap Add User or the + button.
  4. Enter the family member’s name and email address. Use an email they actually check — this is where the invite lands.
  5. Confirm and send the invite. Control4 fires off an email to that person.
  6. Your family member opens the email, taps the link, and creates their own password. Once that’s done, they download the Control4 app from the App Store or Google Play, sign in with their new details, and your home appears automatically.

That’s it. No re-commissioning, no visit from us, no sharing passwords. The whole thing runs through the Control4 cloud, so as long as everyone’s signed in to the same home, they’re good to go.

Heads up Invite emails occasionally land in spam or promotions folders. If your family member says it hasn’t arrived after a few minutes, get them to check there before you resend. The invite link is also time-limited, so if it’s been sitting for a couple of days you may need to send a fresh one.

What access does a family member get?

This is the question we get asked most. Here’s the honest answer: in a standard residential Control4 setup, a family member you invite gets the same day-to-day control as you. They can:

  • Turn lights, scenes and dimmers on and off
  • Control music and video around the house — Triad audio zones, the TV, streaming
  • Adjust heating and cooling if your climate control is integrated
  • Lock and unlock smart locks and trigger the garage or gate
  • View cameras and the front-door intercom
  • Arm and disarm security, if that’s part of your system

What they generally can’t do is the administrative stuff. Inviting and removing other users, transferring ownership of the home, and the deeper programming all stay with the owner account and with us. Family members get a full, friendly remote — not the keys to the engine room.

If you’ve got a more complex job — say a holiday house, a granny flat, or you want the kids locked out of certain rooms or the alarm — Control4 can do partitioned access and room-level restrictions, but that’s something we configure in Composer for you rather than a toggle in the app. Just drop us a line and we’ll tailor it.

Tip Each family member can personalise their own app — favourite rooms, custom buttons, which screen opens first — without it affecting anyone else’s. So your teenager’s app can open straight to their bedroom and music, and yours can open to the whole house. Nice and tidy.

Removing a family member

People move out, housemates change, the cleaner no longer needs access — whatever the reason, pulling someone’s access is just as quick as adding it. We always recommend doing this promptly when someone’s circumstances change, especially if they had access to door locks or the alarm.

  1. Open the Control4 app and go to Settings > Account > Users.
  2. Find the person you want to remove in the list of users.
  3. Tap their name, then choose Remove (or swipe to delete, depending on your app version).
  4. Confirm. Their access to your home is revoked straight away.

The moment you remove them, their app loses the connection to your home. They can’t control anything, view cameras or unlock doors any more. Their personal Control4 login still exists as an account — you’re just removing their link to your house.

Heads up Removing an app user does not change door lock codes or alarm PINs. If a former resident also knows a physical lock code or security code, you’ll want to change those separately. Lock codes are managed in the app, but for alarm code changes it’s worth checking with us if your security system is professionally monitored.

A few good habits

Over the years we’ve picked up a few things that keep family access running smoothly:

  • One person, one login. Resist the temptation to share a single account across the household. Individual logins mean you can remove one person without disrupting everyone else.
  • Keep the owner account safe. The owner email is the master key for your whole system. Use a strong password and don’t reuse it from another site.
  • Update the app. Family members should keep the Control4 app updated through the App Store or Google Play so they’re getting the latest features and fixes that match your OS 3 system.
  • Review your user list now and then. Have a quick look every few months and clear out anyone who no longer needs access.

For the bigger picture on accounts and apps, Control4’s own support site is a solid reference — have a read of the official Control4 help centre if you want the manufacturer’s word on anything. And if you’re still getting your bearings with the app generally, our guide on getting started with the Control4 app walks through the basics.

When to call us instead

The invite-and-remove process above is genuinely something every homeowner can do themselves, and we encourage you to. But if you want room-level restrictions, separate access for a granny flat or short-stay rental, child profiles that can’t touch the alarm, or you’ve lost access to the owner account altogether — that’s our department. None of it requires re-running cable or touching the switchboard, it’s all configuration, and we can usually handle it remotely.

That’s the whole point of setting your account up properly on handover day: it puts you in control without you ever needing to worry about the technical side. Add the family, remove who you need to, and the system just works.

If you get stuck or you’d like us to fine-tune who can do what, give the DUKE team a buzz — we set your system up and we’re always happy to help you get the most out of it. Cheers, Adam and the DUKE team.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to share my Control4 password to give my family access?

No, and you shouldn’t. Invite each family member from the app using their email address and they’ll create their own password. This keeps your owner account secure while giving everyone their own login.

What can a family member control once I invite them?

In a standard setup they get the same day-to-day control as you: lights, music, video, climate, locks, cameras and security. They can’t manage other users, transfer ownership or change the programming — that stays with the owner account and with us.

How many family members can I add to my Control4 system?

You can add as many as you need. Each person gets their own login and can personalise their own app layout without affecting anyone else’s.

If I remove someone, does that change my door lock codes or alarm PIN?

No. Removing an app user only revokes their link to your home in the Control4 app. If they also know a physical lock code or alarm PIN, you’ll need to change those separately — give us a call if your security is monitored.

The invite email never arrived. What should I do?

Check the spam and promotions folders first, as invites sometimes land there. Invite links are time-limited, so if it’s been a day or two, just resend a fresh invite from the app.
