Got a new phone? Good news — getting the Control4 app back on it is one of the easier jobs you’ll do today. Nine times out of ten when a customer rings us about this, it’s a five-minute fix and they’re back to controlling their lights, music and heating from the couch in no time. Here’s exactly how we walk our Melbourne customers through it.

Before you start

Make sure of a couple of things first, because they save a lot of head-scratching later:

  • You know your Control4 account email and password (this is the account we set up — or you set up — when your system was first commissioned).
  • Your new phone is on your home Wi-Fi, on the same network as your Control4 controller. This matters for the first sign-in.
  • Your system is running OS 3.4 or newer. If you’re not sure, ask us — most systems we look after are well up to date.
Tip If you’ve forgotten your account password, don’t keep guessing. Use the “Forgot password” link on the sign-in screen, or give us a ring and we’ll sort it out for you.

Step 1: Download the Control4 app

The official app is simply called Control4 and it’s published by SnapAV/Control4. Don’t grab one of the look-alikes — there are a few cheeky knock-offs floating around.

  1. Open the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android).
  2. Search for Control4.
  3. Look for the publisher listed as Control4 or SnapAV, then tap Get or Install.
  4. Once it’s installed, open it up.

The app is free to download — your access to your own system is part of what you already own. You can read more straight from the source on the Control4 website if you’d like the official rundown.

Step 2: Sign in to your account

When you first open the app, it’ll ask you to sign in. This is your Control4 account (sometimes called your customer account), not your Apple or Google login.

  1. Tap Sign In.
  2. Enter the email address tied to your Control4 account.
  3. Enter your password and tap Sign In again.

If you’ve got two-factor authentication switched on (we recommend it), you’ll get a code by email or text — pop that in and you’re through.

Tip Not sure which email your account uses? It’s usually the one you gave us at install. If a different family member set it up, sign in with their details — one account can be shared across the whole household’s devices.

Step 3: Find your home

Once you’re signed in, the app needs to connect to your actual system. This is where being on your home Wi-Fi really helps.

  1. If you’re at home and on the right network, the app should automatically discover your controller and show your home by name.
  2. Tap your home to connect. The app will pull down your rooms, lighting, audio, climate and everything else we’ve programmed for you.
  3. Give it a moment the first time — it’s downloading your full system layout, so it can take a few seconds longer than usual.

If your home doesn’t appear straight away, check that you’re connected to your home Wi-Fi and not 4G/5G mobile data. The very first connection on a new phone is best done at home, on the same network as the controller. After that, the app remembers your home and connects from anywhere.

Once it’s loaded, you’ll see your familiar room navigation. Tap into a room and you’ve got your lights, shades, music and heating right there. If something looks like it’s missing or in the wrong room, that’s usually a quick programming tweak — have a look at our mobile app guides or get in touch.

Step 4: Set up away access with 4Sight / Control4 Connect

This is the bit people forget — and then they’re standing at the airport wondering why they can’t check whether they left the garage open.

To control your system when you’re away from home (on mobile data, or any Wi-Fi that isn’t yours), you need an active 4Sight subscription, now also known as Control4 Connect. This is the service that lets the app reach your home securely over the internet. Without it, the app only works while you’re connected to your home network.

  • If you already have 4Sight/Connect: there’s nothing extra to do on the new phone. Once you’ve signed in with the same account, remote access just works.
  • If you’re not sure whether you have it: try opening the app while on mobile data, away from home Wi-Fi. If your home connects, you’re covered. If it can’t reach your system, your subscription may have lapsed or never been activated.
Tip 4Sight/Control4 Connect also unlocks handy extras like remote notifications and scheduling that follows sunrise and sunset. If you’ve never had it and you travel a bit, it’s well worth turning on. We can activate it for you in a few minutes — just reach out.

For more on getting connected from outside the house, our network and remote access section goes into the detail.

Step 5: Remove your old phone from the account

When you retire an old phone — selling it, trading it in, or handing it down to the kids — it’s good practice to remove it from your Control4 account. There’s no hard limit that’ll lock you out, but tidying up means an old device can’t be used to poke at your system later.

The cleanest way to do this on the old phone, while you still have it:

  1. Open the Control4 app on the old phone.
  2. Go to Settings (the gear or menu icon, depending on your version).
  3. Tap Sign Out to disconnect the account from that device.
  4. Then delete the app from the old phone before you wipe or hand it on.

If the old phone is already gone, the safest move is to change your Control4 account password. That immediately ends access for any device signed in with the old credentials, and you can simply sign back in on your new phone with the new password.

Heads up If your old phone was also acting as a wired-in display or a dedicated controller in the home, don’t just bin it — that may have been part of the way we set your system up. Check with us first so we can make sure nothing in your automation breaks.

A quick word on what the app can and can’t change

The app is brilliant for day-to-day control and for tweaking schedules, scenes and favourites. What it won’t do is rewire anything. Any work involving your switchboard, mains wiring or fixed lighting circuits is licensed-electrician work here in Australia under AS/NZS 3000 — that’s our team’s job, not a job for an app. You can read the basics on Australian electrical standards if you’re curious about where the line sits, or check the official Standards Australia information.

If something’s not playing nice

The usual culprits when a new phone won’t connect:

  • Wrong network: first sign-in should be on your home Wi-Fi.
  • Wrong account: double-check the email — a typo at sign-up will leave you staring at an empty home list.
  • No 4Sight/Connect: remote access needs the subscription active.
  • Old OS: very old systems may need an update from us before the latest app behaves.

If you’ve worked through all that and it’s still stubborn, our troubleshooting guides cover the next steps, and we’re always happy to take a look remotely.

That’s the lot — download, sign in, find your home, sort your away access, and tidy up the old device. Most of our customers have this done over a cuppa. If yours digs its heels in, give us a yell and we’ll get you sorted. Cheers from Adam and the team at DUKE.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be at home to set up the Control4 app on my new phone?

For the first sign-in, yes — connect your new phone to your home Wi-Fi, on the same network as your controller, so the app can discover and load your home. After that initial setup, the app remembers your home and can connect from anywhere if you have 4Sight/Control4 Connect active.

Why can't I control my system when I'm away from home?

Away access requires an active 4Sight (Control4 Connect) subscription. Without it, the app only works on your home network. Test it by opening the app on mobile data away from home — if it can’t reach your system, your subscription may have lapsed. We can activate it for you quickly.

Is the Control4 app free to download?

Yes. The official Control4 app is free on the App Store and Google Play. Access to your own system is part of what you already own, though remote (away-from-home) access needs a 4Sight/Connect subscription.

How do I stop my old phone from accessing my system?

On the old phone, open the app, go to Settings and Sign Out, then delete the app. If the phone is already gone, change your Control4 account password — that immediately ends access for any device signed in with the old details.

What if my home doesn't appear after I sign in?

Check you’re on your home Wi-Fi rather than mobile data, and confirm you’ve signed in with the correct Control4 account email. If it still won’t appear, your system may need an update — give DUKE a call and we’ll take a look remotely.
